Chamonix is set at the foot of Europe’s highest mountain, the awesome Mont Blanc at 4807m. A fascinating and traditional ski resort, the cosmopolitan town centre offers a good range of shops, bars and restaurants. With much of the terrain above 2000m, the skiing in Chamonix valley has for many years attracted skiers looking for good snow and who also want to ski the famous Vallée Blanche. There’s an efficient ski bus which links the five main ski areas that has a large range of skiing for all abilities, including Argentière, just 8kms further up the valley, Brévent-Flégère and the pretty nearby village of Les Houches. For the advanced slkier, Chamonix has pretty much endless amounts of off-piste and freeride skiing. Unlike many other French resorts, it's a large, picturesque, vibrant town, with a bustling atmosphere and with the many off slope activities, there is also plenty to do for the non-skier.
